A WEEK OF MEMORIES WITH TROY AND FAMILY... (June 22, 2014)

Thoughts for the week:

"It's nice when you pray for someone, but it's better if you become an answer to someone's prayer."

"Be sensitive and try to understand other people's pain.  Sometimes that's all they need to heal."

"If you can't be happy for other people, at least don't ruin their happiness."

"Make sure your words are sweet, you never know when you may have to eat them."

This week went by so fast!  Troy and his family arrived on Monday evening and it's been a whirlwind everyday since.  It was so exciting to finally have some of our kids come to Nauvoo. We've been so homesick for them.  As they rounded the corner on Hotchkiss Street I started to cry tears of joy.  Rudi was so excited to see them that he walked up the street to make sure they turned in on the right street.  I think he just wanted to be the first one to see them!  They all looked so great and hugs and kisses were being passed around to every grandchild and Troy and Kristin.  Our biggest surprise was Joshua towering over grandma and almost as tall as grandpa.  Little Ainsley just wrapped her arms around our legs and wouldn't let go.  What a cutie and so full of love for us.  Carson and Caden were absolutely so charming and grownup.  Tieler was darling and beautiful as usual.  She's so loving and kind to us and very interested in a cute perspective missionary back home, so you can imagine where most of her thoughts are!

Rosey and Steve were still here so they also welcomed them and enjoyed seeing them.  They left the next morning for their daughters in Virginia.  We've had a fabulous time with them and the fun times kept going on with Troy's family.

Troy and family stayed in a cute log cabin here in Nauvoo.  We ate all our meals together at our cottage.  Grandma stocked the freezer, fridge and cupboards with all the grandkids favorite food and treats.  I think everyone enjoyed spending more time with us than having grandma spend time making everything homemade.  It sure was much easier on me!

I think they saw all the plays and performances going on in Nauvoo right now.  We went to most of the sites.  One day was spent seeing Carthage Jail and in Burlington.  I had arranged tickets for them to see Rendezvous, Just Plain Anna Amanda a puppet show, Sunset on the Mississippi, and a special Jazz band and dance group from B.Y.U.  Everyone was so agreeable to all the performances and seemed to enjoy learning more about the early Saints in Nauvoo.  We also went to the Family Search Center and made fan charts of their ancestors so they could know the names of their blood line back five generations.

The highlight of their visit was being able to see my grandkids baptized and confirmed for the dead in the Nauvoo Temple.  Troy baptized them and Rudi helped confirm them at the fonts edge.  Troy and Kristin then went upstairs and did all the initiatory work for those ancestors that were just baptized and confirmed.  The next day Rudi and I officiated an endowment session that Troy and Kristin were the witnesses in. It was wonderful to know all the work they did was their ancestors also.  A lot of long awaited work being done for our family last week.  My heart is full of gratitude for their desire to help me with this important work.  Kristin even took home a stack of family file cards that her family can work on at home.  What a sweetheart she is and just possible the best daughter-in-law any one could have.  After the session Rudi took them on the tour of the temple.  Troy and Rudi were like little boys checking out all the neat pipes and mechanical workings of the temple.  Rudi misses his son so much and loved having him here to see all his toys and playground (the temple).

I asked them before they left what was their favorite thing in Nauvoo.  Everyone's answer was different.  There is so much to see and do here.  We will always cherish our time with them in this City of Joseph.  Hopefully their testimonies of the Early Saints and the sacrifice they made for us will be forever imprinted on their minds and hearts.  We feel so fortunate to be able to serve a temple mission here and have our children come and see and feel some of what we experience everyday.

Since Ainsley will be starting kindergarten this fall we had our German tradition of celebrating her with giving her a sugartutan (spelling not sure) filled with treats and surprises for her.  She also wears a dundal dress (spelling again) and we take pictures of her.  I have a wall in my house at home with all the previous grandchildren who have started school.  Ainsley will now join that hall of recognition.  What a sweetheart she is and so special to be the only grandchild to have her picture taken in Nauvoo.  Kristen brought all the clothes and sugartutan with her so we could honor Ainsley.  I'll send more pictures next week of her with grandma and grandpa.

Right now it's raining, lightning, thundering harder than we've ever experienced in Nauvoo yet. The little ditch in front of our place is flooding over with excess water.  It's only 5:30 and it's as dark as if it were 9:00 at night.  Midwest storms are a lot more severe than Utah storms.  Everything when it comes to weather is a lot worse in the Midwest.  I'm so grateful we are back from our Sunday assignment in Canton.  Speaking of Canton, my Relief Society lesson went really well and the spirit was so strong.  One of our newly baptized sisters bore her testimony of how Heavenly Father knew her personally and guided her to the correct church.  Our lesson was on "Fear Not; I Am With Thee"  and her testimony really brought it all together. Rudi's lesson went well also.  He lead a group discussion on keeping the sabbath day holy and what we can do appropriate on Sunday.  He's getting to be a natural at teaching.  We're so thankful for this opportunity to serve in the Canton Branch.  I think we're learning more from them than they are from us.  The blessings just keep coming!  Life is good and the gospel is so true.  It blesses us in so many ways.  I also shared my homemade caramels with the Relief Society sisters as a thank you for being so SWEET and welcoming to us into their branch.

We're getting so excited to pick up Ellie in St. Louis one week from tomorrow.  What am I going to do when all my company goes home and I have to go back to reality.  It will be O.K. since we live in a bubble here in Nauvoo.  We really haven't missed that much time of temple work while Troy's family was here.  We try and work around our schedule and meet them after for more quality time together.  The only draw back is the high humidity and hot days. We try and do inside activities during the day and go outside in the evening and early morning.  So far I haven't melted yet like the wicked witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz.

So much to email about, but I'm sure you're getting tired of reading.  Just know that this week was so special and the memories made will last forever.  Nine more months until we see them again.  By then Joshua will be driving and Tieler will be getting ready to graduate.  They're growing up way to fast.  I'm so glad Rudi and I are not going to get any older!  Don't I wish!!!

Until next week, have a lot of summer fun.  Be sure and make memories and be kind to each other.

We love you all and appreciate your support in this wonderful mission.

Rudi and Kathy
Mom and Dad
GRANDPA AND GRANDMA (miss our grandkids beyond words, but know you're being great examples of living the gospel).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my oldest grandson Joshua. He is Troy and Kristin's oldest son.  He'll be 15 on June 29th.  Such a good kid and so much fun to be around.  Just three years and he'll be wearing a badge like ours.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our oldest daughter and child, Tiffini.  Wish I had a picture of her alone, but as usual she's always with her kids and husband. What an awesome day June 26th was when she made us parents for the first time.  We love and appreciate all she does for us and our family.

Troy and Kristin's family at Carthage Jail.  What a fantastic fun filled family they are.  Thanks for a wonderful week of memories.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARRIVING... (June 15, 2014)

Thoughts for the week:

HAPPY FATHERS DAY, ALL YOU SPECIAL FATHERS!!!

"A man who truly loves you will protect you when you're in danger.  A FATHER will ensure you don't get in trouble in the first place."

"A FATHER doesn't tell you that he loves you.  He shows you."

"When I die I want my last words to be, "I left a million dollars under the....."

"I'm going to retire and live off my savings.  What I'll do the second day, I have no idea."

"I really think that tossing and turning at night should be considered as exercise."

What a great Father's Day we're having in  Nauvoo.  Having Steve and Rosey here for a few days has been so delightful.  We've been going around Nauvoo seeing a lot of sites.  They arrived on Friday afternoon and it's been non-stop since then.  We had dinner at the Nauvoo Hotel buffet which was very good. We then took them to Sunset on the Mississippi and Living Legions on Friday night.  Great shows and perfect weather to be out in the evening.  Saturday they met us at the temple and they went on the 10:00 a.m. endowment session which I was privilege to help officiate.  After Rudi took them on a tour of the behind the scenes part of the temple.  Downstairs to see pipes and all the mechanical things, then up to the bell tower which Steve went to the very top with Rudi.  Rosey and I just watched them go higher and higher.  That night we went to Burlington to eat lobster.  I think we're all going to gain a few pounds!

Today being Father's Day I fixed a steak dinner with potato salad, baked beans, and  tossed salad.  I think we've been eating way to much, but that's part of the Nauvoo experience.

Last Monday our good friends the Gehrings, Mark and Myrt, from Orem, along with their friends the Gardners arrived in Nauvoo.  We spent most of the day with them at the fun and informative shows around Nauvoo.  It was so much fun catching up on all the happenings in Orem.  The only thing that would have made it better is if Laura and Blaine Wirth could've been with them.  Such great friends that we miss and love so much.  Thanks Myrt for making the trip happen.  Oh, by the way all the yummy candy you brought is GONE!

The rest of the week went smoothly in the temple.  Slowly the numbers are picking up.  On Wednesday evening we had an extra six and seven o'clock session for the site missionary cast members.  Because it was a special extra session for them no one knew about the six o'clock session, so guess what no one came for that session but we had 24 sisters and 19 brothers on the seven o'clock session.  Since I'm the endowment coordinator on Wednesday night I had to stay and keep many others there until around 9:30.  Thats late when you consider we get there around 12:30 in the afternoon.
It's all good since so many people helped so many who have passed on.
I love being a part of this great and valuable work.

Rosey and Steve will be here until Tuesday.  We plan to go to Cantrell tomorrow and stop at the Dutchman and see the Amish leather store and a few more fun little towns.  Wish they could stay longer but I'm sure her daughter Lori and the grandkids are anxious for them to get to Virginia.

So excited for Troy and his family to arrive tomorrow and be here until Saturday.  We have a lot of activities planned for them.  Most important will be baptisms and endowment sessions in the temple.  Love having company and especially seeing my grandkids.  Should be a lively week with lots of memories to be made.

Anyone planning to come to Nauvoo, we'd love to see you.  I'm still waiting for someone to come up to me and surprise me in the temple.

Well it's time to close and go with Rosey and Steve on a walk down Parley Street, on the Trial of Hope.  They have some of the B.Y.U. preforming groups sharing touching testimonies of the Saints as they left Nauvoo.  I'm really looking forward to hearing and seeing this special reenactment.

Thanks all of you for your loving support and prayers in our behalf.  Our experience here has been and will always be the high light of our senior years.  Have a wonderful Father's Day.

Until next week,

Rudi and Kathy
Mom and Dad
GRANDPA AND GRANDMA (We continue to pray for you special grandkids, stay strong and true to your beliefs). We love and miss you terribly.

NAUVOO IS COMING ALIVE!!! (June 8, 2014)

Thoughts for the week:

"As you get older you find out that true happiness is not in how much you make, or how many degrees you have, or how big your house is, or how fancy your car is.  It's finding peace and joy and  calmness in your life that will soon become the most important thing to you.  Your family are what matters to you, love is what matters to you.  Things that are of quality, not of quantity."

"Don't worry about those who talk behind your back, they're behind you for a reason."

"So much in life depends on our attitude.  The way we choose to see things and respond to others makes all the difference.  To do the best we can and then to choose to be happy about our circumstances, whatever they may be, can bring peace and contentment.  We can't direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails."  Pres. Thomas S. Monson

Nauvoo is really coming a live with activity.  We step our our front door and we can hear the Nauvoo Brass Band playing or the bagpipes in the distance. Just this week the special performers from B.Y.U. have arrived and are performing in so many venues.  We also have the Living Legions (formerly called the  Laminite   Generation) that is here for 11 days.  The contemporary dancers from the Y will be here after them until pageant starts in July.  Everything is free and so well done, its like you can't find enough time to see it all.  Loving it!!!

We just got back from our Sunday visit to Canton.  Rudi and I spoke in sacrament meeting.  So glad that is over and we can breath this week.  We got a lot of nice compliments from people that we felt like maybe we did O.K.  You know have much Rudi doesn't like to speak.  Well he did outstanding!  I'll never figure out why he stresses so much.  This assignment in Canton has really stretched us (especially Rudi, since he hates to speak and teach).  He is now the Gospel Principals teacher and doing a great job.  Last week as we walked into the chapel the counselor in the branch presidency asked me to substitute Primary and help in the nursery the 3rd hour.  Wow, run from that man from now on.  He also was the one who asked us to speak today.  This little branch really needs us and we're here to help and support them the best we can.  There were about 60 in the audience today in sacrament.  In the Gospel Principals class we had 9 people,  pretty good for a small branch.  There were two couples who were just baptized a few weeks ago.  They really participated and seemed really interested in what we had to say.  I think we're getting the missionary bug!  In two weeks I teach the Relief Society lesson and the week after we are having a potluck dinner after the block.  It's so the ward members can invite their non-L.D.S. friends and neighbors to church and the potluck to socialize.  I signed up to bring fudge mint brownies.  Maybe I can melt some hearts with them!!  HaHa  Love serving in this branch.  Great people who are so welcoming to us.

Last week I told you about falling down the stairs.  Well, everything is O.K.  No broken bones just a broken pride!  My leg still hurts but the bruise and swelling is going down.  I'll probably take another scare home to remind me of Nauvoo.  Rudi thinks I'm a Klutz and I'm beginning to think he's right!  Lately my mind goes faster than my body and thus I crash and trip over things all the time.  Don't ya just love old age!!!!!  So glad I can blame it all on age.

This week I spent a lot of time in  initiatory.  People who don't have time for a session usually do 5 names or more and can be through in about 30 to 40 minutes.  Tourists are always in a hurry so we understand and help make their stay at the temple as enjoyable as possible.  I hope I can spend as much time as possible with my family doing temple work.  I've got a lot of relatives who are getting anxious to move forward in their eternal progression.  Can't wait to meet some of these special ancestors I've been working on and getting their cards ready for the temple work to be done.  I sure hope they accept this gift I'm offering them.
Hope my family realizes that they are their ancestors also and they are a part of this much needed work waiting to be done.

I've arranged for Rudi and I to officiate the Saturday session that my sister Rosey and her husband will be on.  Looking forward to their arrival on Friday.  I've missed her so much!

Our friends Myrt and Mark Ghering and their friends are arriving in Nauvoo tonight to spend a few days seeing the sights.  Love having friends and family anytime.  Excited to see them and go to dinner with them tomorrow night.

The weather here has been delightful so far this week.  A lot of rain yesterday while we were in the temple, but the temperature has been around 60 to 70 most of the time.  Wish it would be like that all summer.

Rudi says I've written enough so I guess I'll close and make some banana cake with the over ripe bananas I have.
We love you all and can't wait to greet our family and friends in the next few weeks.

Thanks for your love and support.  Donna and Ken Biberston, good luck in your travels home in a few weeks.  Look forward to your visit in September or whenever you can come.

With love always,

Rudi and Kathy

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AINSLEY!  Sweet Ainsley turns 5 today June 8th.  Love this special sunshine!  She's Troy and Kristin's youngest child.  So full of life and fun.  Can't wait to see her in one week.

YEA!  Our tomato plant made it and is looking great.

Our flowers are planted and add so much color to our frontyard.

Tieler's friend Taylor and us at the temple.  He's on a senior class tour of the church sites and got to do baptisms for the dead in the Nauvoo Temple.

Rudi and I in Burlington at Snake Alley!

The Fairchild's, Diederich's, Nelson's and Curtis's at Snake Alley.  Just showing them around Burlington since they are new missionaries and getting to know the area.  Snake Alley is a twisty steep street that is hard to drive on but fun.  Really fun people!

CRAZY FOR FLOWERS... (June 1, 2014)

Thought for the week:

"Sometimes you are delayed where you are because God knows there's a storm where you're headed.  Be Grateful."

"My daughter suggested I get the names of my children tattooed on my body.  I told her I already did...they're called stretch marks."

"Oh my goodness.  I'm rich!  Silver in my hair, Gold in my teeth, Crystal in the kidneys, Sugar in the blood, Lead in the rear end, Iron in the arteries, and an inexhaustible supply of Natural Gas.   I never thought I'd accumulate such wealth!"

I apologize if my thoughts are a little gross for a missionary, but I need humor in my life.  I love to laugh and I hope you do also!

We spent time this week going around and enjoying the beautiful flowers in the Nauvoo area.  Hope you enjoy the pictures.  I love all the color and happiness they bring into my life.  I've learned to stop and not just smell the roses but truly enjoy them.  My mom always loved flowers and I think I'm more like her than I thought.

I'm sending my email a day early for a reason.  I felt like I needed another souvenir from Nauvoo.  I tried to keep up with Pres. McArthur this morning after our 6:00 a.m. prayer meeting going down the circular staircase in the temple and caught my dress on the toe of my shoe and fell four stairs down on my leg.  Result bleeding leg and swollen and bruised.  The first person they call is the engineers, and guess who showed up to assist me?  You're right, Bro. Diederich.  I don't think I broke anything but we see the doctor this afternoon after I've iced it and the swelling goes down.  They wanted to take me out in the wheelchair but I insisted I could walk, and I did.  End result, I'm home with my leg propped up and ice on, ice off.  So much fun!  I'm such a clumsy person sometimes.  I was following the president because I lost my recommend yesterday after my shift at the temple and I was following him down the stairs to his office to get interviewed for a new one since our recommends expire next month.  O.K. lets hope bad luck doesn't come in three's.  I need a break, not in my leg!

This week has been somewhat very normal.  We keep waiting for the large crowds to start arriving.  A lot of schools are out and that usual means people start traveling.  Maybe next week.

I'm really enjoying swimming and getting more exercise.  I'm meeting people at the pool and taking to them about Nauvoo and why I'm here.  Maybe I'll plant a little seed of interest in the church for a few tourists.

We just heard that the Durrants received their mission call to St. George and report the first part of October.  They will be serving in the same mission as John and Darolyne Childs.  She said they will be giving special lectures during the week and giving tours of the church history sites.  She has a home in St. George so it works out for them nicely.  Lucky St. George, you'll be in for a special treat.
We hope to keep in touch with them when we are down there at the condo.
We've enjoyed her Tuesday and Thursday lectures on the past Latter day Saints presidents.  Last Thursday was on Pres. McKay.  He was my president growing up and holds a special spot in my heart.  I remember asking my mom when I was young if he was the president of the United States or president of the church.  I also remember at one General Conference getting to sit on his lap for just a moment when we attended.  I think we were sitting in some of the choir seats because there wasn't a full choir for some reason and my mom said I just walked down the steps and stood in front of him and he picked me up and put me on his lap.  Can't remember all the details but I do remember his white, white full head of hair.  Wonderful man, and so sweet to his Emma Rae, his wife.  She was so short and he was so tall!  Susan Durrant really brings the presidents to life, and relates such interesting details about their lives.  They go home in August and will be dearly missed.  They're brought such a spirit to our mission.

The days are getting longer and longer and the heat is coming on.  So far the humidity hasn't bother me.  It's fun to have the sun up when we go to the tempe early in the morning, and still have some sunlight when we get through in the evening.  This week we are going to try and see some of the shows around the Nauvoo sites.  The pageant doesn't start until July but there are other special performances each night to see.  All the young performers are here and are so much fun.  They bring a new life to Nauvoo.  They have so much energy and spirit!  The young sister missionaries come to the temple a lot.  I'm beginning to recognize them.  They put on a special sociable last Sunday night that was fantastic.  So much talent!  They sang and bore testimonies of the gospel and how they had been touched by the spirit. I'm so impressed with these sisters and know the church is moving forward much faster with their help.  The church was so inspired to have sisters serve at a younger age, more young women are going.  Granddaughters, listen to Grandma, you're needed desperately in furthering the gospel, keep an open mind.

I'm starting to feel a little sore so I'm going to close for this week.  I need to move around and try and work out the stiffness that comes when you fall.  We have a lot of special plans coming up with friends and family coming in the near future so I can't let this little mishap stop me.   I'll give it today to heal and then its off to Canton tomorrow for church and teaching assignments.  We're taking Elder Miller with us to Canton to visit our little branch.  We love visiting with him and the drive will go by faster talking to him since the Glassett's aren't going this week with us.

May you all have a wonderful week.  We think about family especially around holidays and when there is special events, like all the grandkids swimming in the pool.  Miss being there but there will be many years to come full of time together.  Keep up traditions and make some new ones along the way.

With all our love,

Rudi and Kathy

P.S. Can't wait to see you this summer!

Peonies at the Sarah Granger Kimball home in Nauvoo.

 More beautiful flowers, all peonies.

I'm in my element with so many flowers everywhere.

These peonies are different from Utah peonies.

At the King Homestead in Nauvoo.  Bro. King is my partner on Wednesday nights when we are endowment coordinators.  His wife is homebound and he serves one day a week at the temple.  This is his retirement home, surrounded by gorgeous flowers and 20 acres of beautiful property.

Rudi and I touring his yard.

Can you believe the color of these iris?

More iris!  I love flowers and these are spectacular!

Can't get enough of the beauty of his yard.

So much color and variety.  I get my love of flowers from my mom.

One of my favorite colors!

Our next door neighbors, David and Brenda Lindholm, went with us to enjoy the flowers.
