A WEEK TO REMEMBER! (November 18, 2014)

Thoughts for the week:

"When you were born, you were crying, and everyone around you was smiling.  Live your life so that when you die, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying."

"It is easier to build up a child than it is to repair an adult...Choose your words wisely."

"The struggle you're in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow.  DON'T GIVE UP."

Wow, where do I begin to write about a fabulous week in New York City with five crazy, wonderful, energetic, and loving daughters and granddaughters!  It all went by so fast and now we're all back home to reality.  We made some pretty wonderful memories and lifted each other's spirits so much.

Since the Nauvoo Temple has been shutdown for three weeks I decided to meet my family in New York.  Tiffini, Traci, Kristin, Tieler and Ellie meet me there for a roller coaster ride of fun.  We went to so many places and saw so much I don't know where to begin.  I guess at  the first would be the best place.

I arrived on Monday and Traci and Ellie meet me at the JFK Airport.  It was so late that we taxied to the city and crashed.

Sometime either Tuesday or Wednesday Traci and Ellie rode bikes thru Central Park.  I sat down and people watched and then walked back to our hotel about 10 blocks.  The weather was beautiful that day and a great day to be outdoors.  We did so many things that I get all the days mixed up.  All I know is that I loved every minute.

The next day Traci had everything planned out so we could see and do a ton of things.  We spent most of the day in Chelsea.  There are so many fun shops and restaurants in that  area of Manhattan. We loved the Chelsea Market and ate lobster rolls for lunch.  Ellie hates seafood so she covered her nose most the time.  We also walked on the High Line an old railroad track converted into a park where people can walk and enjoy the gardens.  From there we went  to Columbia University to see the campus.  Maybe Ellie will go here to school someday.  Work on a scholarship the tuition is out of sight.

Our next stop was at Absolute Bagels for their wonderful bagels of every kind and cream cheese.  From there we walked to St. John the Devine Cathedral.  Beautiful building but very cold internally and externally.  You come away with a feeling of emptiness.

Tuesday night we went to the new Ground Zero Museum.  It was free admission that night and what a crowd.  Normally it costs $25.00 to get in so everyone came that night.  It was amazing and very touching.  So many lives lost for such a random act of terrorism.  I'll never forget the photos on the walls of people jumping to their deaths, and spectators feeling obligated to watch their final act of courage in honor of those heroic people.  A very powerful place to visit and remember what took place on that dreadful day on 9/11.   During  that day we also went to Dominique Ansel's for cronuts and DKAs.  We always shared just a bit with each other.  So many places to go and so many fun foods to try.  Rice to Riches was also delicious.  Love the rum rice pudding. Yes, I think we all gained a few pounds.

Wednesday we continued our whirlwind of activities by going to the play "You Can't Take It With You."  A hilarious mixed up play about a crazy family.  Really enjoyed it!  That night we went to Aladdin.  Wow, the show was so exciting and the staging was amazing.  Loved the costumes and fun antics of the genie and Aladdin.  We ate at John's Pizzera before the play and of course we loved it.  Nothing better than New York pizza!

Late Wednesday night Tiffini, Kristin and Tieler arrived.  We had adjoining rooms so we woke up when they arrived and had to hug and kiss and catch up on all the latest adventures with them.

Thursday morning came very early for us since we stayed up so late.  We had to be at the "Live with Kelly and Michael Show" by 7:45.  It was so cold waiting to get into the show.  We all had a great time.

Traci, if I've gotten all these places and events mixed up, please forgive me.  Just know that everywhere we went was spectacular and memorable.  Your planning was amazing and we saw so much thanks to your organization.

After the Kelly and Michael Show we waked a half a block to the Manhattan Temple.  Tieler and Ellie did family baptisms while Tiffini and I did initiatories.  Traci and Kristin went back to the baptistry and watched the girls get baptized.  It's a beautiful temple but very small and very few temple workers around.  They didn't have enough workers for Traci and Kristin to do any initiatories.  All the temple workers had to go and help with the endowment session.  I think they could use Rudi and I there as temple workers.  It wouldn't be a bad place to serve.  In fact a great place to serve.  I love New York!

We then had lunch at the Shake Shack.  Great burgers!

Wednesday night we saw Cinderella.  we all wished Addie, Ainsley and Callie could've been there to see all the glitz and glamour of this show.  Someday I'll need to take them to New York to see how amazing it all is.

Friday and Saturday we went to the Empire State Building and Ground Zero.  Tieler has never been to see the tourist attractions so we enjoyed watching her and her reaction to it all.  Her first time on the subway, time square at night with all the lights, lots of taxi cab rides, all the fun stores,  Maceys, Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Station, American Girl Place, Rockefeller Center, Serendipity for the best and largest hot fudge sundaes in the world.  Yes, Grandmas  favorite place to go!

Saturday night Traci, Tiffini, Ellie and I went to see the play If/Then.  By then I was so wasted that I must admit I don't remember a lot but the girls said it was great.  Idina Menzel was the lead and has a great voice.  What I heard was really good.

By Sunday we all were getting tired but still ready to keep going.  We took the ferry to Brooklyn and saw the Manhattan skyline from the ferry.  We then walked back to Manhattan over the Brooklyn bridge.  Yes, I walked all the way back.  Check that off my bucket list.  I felt so good but very tired.  Glad I did it!  After we had our last meal together at Grimaldi's Pizza in Brooklyn.  What a way to end a fantastic vacation with the best people ever.  Thanks girls for making my memories of New York so wonderful.  I know I have forgotten so many things but all I know is that I'll never forget this trip and I hope we can have many more together.

We all flew home Sunday night.  So hard to say goodbye again, but I'll see them again in a short 41/2 months.  Rudi picked me up in Moline after a two hour delay in Chicago.  It's good to be back and continue on with the best mission in the church.

Today, Tuesday we started back at the temple.  So many changes, new phone system to learn, new covered chairs in all the endowment rooms.  Rudi and crew did a wonderful job on the chairs while I was playing.  He really deserves a vacation but we're back in the saddle again.  Today we're working a double shift.  We went in this morning at 9:00 to 1:00, then home until 5:00 to 9:00 tonight. I guess we'll survive but very different.

Well, for those of you who have survived reading all of this email, congratulations.  My fingers and hands are really tingling now.  I went to the doctor yesterday and found out that the reason my hands go numb and tingle are due to carpal tunnel problems.  I'm scheduled to see a surgeon on Dec. 9th to get it fixed.  So much fun, NOT!

I was so sorry to hear about my Aunt Caroly passing away last Saturday while I was gone.  She was such a special person to me.  We shared our diabetes stories.  She was such a fighter right up to the end.  I'll miss her so much.  Two of my moms sisters have passed away so close together.  I'm sure mom is having a great reunion with them in heaven.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Uncle John and his family.  We love you and feel your loss.

Now I really do have to close and get ready to go back to the temple.  We love you all and always appreciate your support.

Stay warm somehow!  We're freezing again just like last year.

Love always,

Rudi and Kathy

NEW YORK HERE I COME!!!! (November 9, 2014)

Thoughts for the week:

"God works the night shift, not you.  Don't spend another sleepless night trying to figure out your problems.  TRUST THE LORD."

"A lot of kneeling will keep you in good standing."

"At our age rolling out of bed in the morning is easy.  Getting up off the floor is another story."

"Time is more valuable than money.  You can get more money, but you cannot get more time."

"EXERCISE?"  I could have sworn you said,  "EXTRA FRIES."

This week has been so different than most.  Since the temple is closed for maintenance for three weeks I'm really bored!  I didn't realize how much time I spent there.  Rudi continues to go everyday to the temple.  They are working so hard to get all 200 seats recovered in the endowment rooms.   He's busier than he's ever been.  I've spent most of my week reading, doing projects I've wanted to get done, going to the family search center, but mostly catching up on sleep and correspondence.  Oh, I also made caramels and divinity candy this week.  Ellie begged me to bring some to New York.  What I won't do to keep my family happy.

Rudi comes home from the temple tired and I'm ready to go somewhere, anywhere!  Thank goodness I'll be plenty busy in New York.

Tomorrow I fly to New York to meet Traci and Ellie.  Tiffini, Kristin and Tieler will arrive on Wednesday.  They have so many fun activities planned.  I hope I can keep up with them!  Next week my email will be late since I don't get home until late Sunday night.  I'll include tons of pictures and have a lot more to write about.

This week we did get to know a few of the missionaries that will be staying for the winter.  We went to dinner with the Rich's from Idaho.  Such a great couple.  They'll be going home in April also.  We also went to a show and dinner with the Dawlings.  They are crazy and fun to be around. I guess we need to make new friends because our old group left last week. We haven't meet any missionaries who weren't outstanding.  We continue to love getting to know these missionaries and feel of their strong testimonies.  I think we'll survive the winter again, thanks to these people.

Today it is 60 degrees, but they've predicted snow for Tuesday.  Yuck!  I'm not ready for ice, snow and wind.
I just hope it doesn't get too cold in New York.  I think we've planned a lot of indoor plays and activities just incase.

We went back to Canton today for church.  We took the Fords, a couple from Bountiful, with us.  As usual being there was delightful!  The people there greeted us with surprise, since they thought our last time was the week before.  I guess we'll continue to make our pilgrimage to Canton until the weather turns really ugly.  I always come away with a renewed love of that branch.

My blood pressure decided to act up again.  I went to the mission doctor and he sent me for blood and urine tests.  I haven't heard the results yet. I guess no news is good news, right? He added another pill, just what I needed.  I've also been having trouble with my right hand going numb and tingly.  The doctor thinks it might be a carpal tunnel problem.  I have an appointment the day after I get home for tests.  O.K. what more can go wrong with this body?  I just hope Heavenly Father lets me finish this mission before I totally fall apart.  I really thought my blood pressure problem was a thing of the past.  I've felt so good since they put the stent in last February.  I guess I need to be humbled every once in a while.  Rudi continues to act like a superman.  Thank goodness one of us is hanging in there.

I'm sorry this email was mostly about me and my problems.  I need to be busier and get back to the temple. When I'm busy I don't have time to think about my problems.

Hope all of you are doing great and enjoying this wonderful season.  Remember to be grateful for what you have and not worry about what you don't have.  We love you all and love hearing from you.

Rudi and Kathy
I'll see some of you this week.  Can't wait!

HAPPY 11TH BIRTHDAY  CALLIE!
Callie turns 11 on November 11th.  She is Tami's oldest child.  Such a cutie and great swimmer!  Have a wonderful birthday and eat cake for me.  See you in April.

The last few signs of fall.  I'll miss the beautiful colored trees.

At Joseph Smith's family home, old and new.  Love the bright yellow tree in the background.

Some of our friends who will still be here for the winter.  Steve and Marie Terry.  They live in St. George.

Brad and Susan Dawling.  They're sticking around for the next year.  Such a fun loving couple from Rexburg, Id.

Steve and Terry Wilson from Washington state.  Staying until Sept.

Can't get enough of these colors, soon to be gone after snow this week.

NAUVOO IS A GHOST TOWN!!!!!! (November 2, 2014)

Thoughts for the week:

"An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward.  When life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means it's going to launch you into something great.  So just focus, and keep aiming."

"While some wait for the doors of opportunity to open, some kick the door down."

"We all start our journey in life differently.  But with all the setbacks and pitfalls we become huaman.  And that is how we begin to see the face of God in each other."

It seems like just a day or two ago when I wrote my last email.  Oh, it was just four days ago.

Nauvoo really seems like a ghost town since 100 missionaries left this week to go home after wonderful missions.  How appropriate is it that Nauvoo became like a GHOST TOWN  just in time for Halloween!  I'm always amazed with the Pumpkin Walk.  The pumpkins were so professionally craved.  It was so fun to walk the streets of Nauvoo with our dear friends before they left.

Last Sunday will always remain such a spiritual high for me.  Being in the Assemble Room in the temple with so many people that we love and care about and having an apostle of The Lord speak to you, how much better can that get?  It's so hard to come back to earth after all that.  This week has been painfully hard.  I'm not sure my eyes will loose their puffiness.  I hate, hate, hate, goodbys.  Now we just wait for the seven new couples who will be here in two weeks.

Our closest and dearest friends were the last to finally leave.  The Mollers didn't get out of here until Wednesday morning and the Lindholms on Thursday.  We helped them get packed and loaded but they had so much STUFF!  I've learned one thing from all this packing.  Get rid of things you don't need and don't collect junk.  I've already started to clean out cupboards and my refrigerator, and I still have five months to go.  Rudi is so nervous wondering how we'll ever get our stuff home.

Tuesday night when the Moller's realized that there was no way they were going to get away that day we took them for a Mexican dinner in Hamilton.  Just another special memory with them.

I spent a day in the Family Search Center this week getting more names to take to the temple.  Rudi had a very successful week in the temple recovering all the seats in the endowment rooms.  They got all the backs done, now this week they'll tackle the seats.  He tells me the temple is really torn up with all the improvements they're making.  They are laying new wood floors in the baptistry area, and running wire for a new phone system.  Hope it all gets done before the opening on November 18th.

On Friday night, Halloween, we went over to the Dalling's for a dinner and fun night talking with the Bassett's, and Ford's.  I guess the parties and fun will continue on.

Yesterday we had Elder Miller over for dinner to celebrate his 21st birthday.  He's such a wonderful elder and always fun to be around.  He goes home from his mission December 15th.  He goes all the way to Carthage to go home.  He plans to go to BYU Idaho in January.  Hopefully we'll keep in touch with him.

This morning we went to church with the site missionaries here in Nauvoo. Next week we'll be back in Canton, that is if the weather permits.  I guess we'll still be going out to Canton.  We're so glad we get to continue with our association with the people in the Canton Branch.

A week from tomorrow I'll be on my way to New York City to meet up with my family.  So excited!  Ellie, my granddaughter has called me everyday this week telling me about how excited she is to see me again and spend time in New York.  Tiffini, Traci, Kristin, Tieler and Ellie are meeting me there.  We'll miss Tami and hope we can get together with her and her family next summer in Yellowstone or just have her come to Utah Valley for as long as she can get away.  They're doing great in Gillette, but missing family as we miss them.  It's hard to be away on holidays.  I know!  Hang in there Tami!

I can't believe I've got this email off so early on Sunday.  What am I going to do the rest of the day?  Maybe I'll take a nap!  That's something I never do unless I'm reading or watching T.V.

Now that November is here we can all think about our many blessings and how grateful we are to have the gospel in our lives.  I know I marvel at how lucky I am to be here in Nauvoo where the early saints gave so much to make sure the gospel continued to grow.  They sacrificed everything they had when they left and crossed the icy Mississippi River to head west.  Now that I have experienced how very cold the weather is here I have a new understanding and love for those dear saints, many who were my ancestors.  I also feel so fortunate to have such good health while serving my mission.  I know The Lord must love me a lot and want me here in Nauvoo to make it possible for me to get over so many health issues before I left.  Rudi continues to be strong as an ox and helpful to everyone, just like he was at home.

We pray for our family and friends daily and hope your lives are full of happiness and love for each other.
We so love and appreciate your concern and support of us.

Until next week be safe and happy,

Rudi and Kathy (the Nauvoo Missionaries)
